Description

Wright Smith was lynched after being accused of assaulting a white woman. A mob broke into the Annapolis city jail and forcibly removed Smith. He momentarily managed to escape the mob and ran down the street. However, the mob shot him in the back several times until he died. Several days later, African American Alderman, Wiley H. Bates proposed a resolution in the Annapolis City Council condemning the lynching, but it failed after receiving only two votes.
