For the purposes of this archive, "lynching" is defined as the extralegal murder of an individual in an act of mob violence that meets the criteria that the NAACP established:

  • there must be evidence a person was killed, i.e., a body;
  • the person must have met his/her death illegally;
  • the person must have been killed by a group of people (i.e., three or more people);
  • the group must have acted under the pretext of serving justice, race, or tradition.
