Description
In May 1892, 23-year-old James Taylor was arrested for raping an 11-year-old girl. Taylor had worked for the family for two years. Amid threats to lynch him, the Chestertown sheriff put Taylor on a tug making a round trip across the bay. It returned early the next morning and Taylor was sent back to his cell. However, that evening more than 500 people converged at the jail demanding Taylor. When the sheriff refused the mob overran the jail, seized Taylor and hanged him.
